Improving the UK's copyright laws
Monday, 06 February 2012 11:19

The end of last year saw the Government launch proposals to modernise the copyright system and remove cumbersome barriers to growth. This follows the recent Hargreaves Review of Intellectual Property.

The proposals include various changes, which may affect the media and entertainment sectors, expressly acknowledging the importance of the UK's creative industries.

Emphasis will be placed on tackling online infringement of copyright and ensuring that the copyright system encourages the creation of, and investment in, music, books, video and other copyright material.

The proposals include (amongst other things):

-  The creation of an exception to allow limited acts of private copying such as copying a CD to an MP3 player (bringing copyright law into line with modern technology and consumers' reasonable expectations)

-  The introduction of an exception for parody and pastiche, giving comedians and others the creative freedom to parody copyright work without having first to obtain permission from the copyright holder;

-  The modernisation of other exceptions to copyright including those for education, quotation and people with disabilities.

The consultation period runs until 21st March 2012.
